TRAILS

TRAILS – TRAIN RESPONSIBLE AI LEARNING SOCIETY

The primary goal of the project entitled TRAILS − TRAIN RESPONSIBLE AI LEARNING SOCIETY is to prepare society for significant advances in the field of artificial intelligence (AI). This includes understanding the new AI tools that are transforming our daily lives and understanding the wider societal impact of AI research. Given the expected impact of tools like Chat-GPT on education, the project will prioritize the education of younger generations. This includes not only introducing them to these tools, but also helping teachers use the AI tools effectively.

Project Description:

The project TRAILS aims to help and prepare society for large progress that has been made in the field of Artificial Intelligence (AI), emerging AI tools that are already transforming our day-to-day work, and the impact that this research will have on our society as a whole. Although AI and machine learning have been used in wide areas of science research for decades, the public has only recently become aware first-hand of their potential through open text-to-image models like DALL-E and Midjourney, and large language models like Chat-GPT. Until recently, the general public has mostly encountered the term AI in Sci-Fi movies and literature, but the details of what it actually means were rarely covered in the general education. Thus, for the general public, AI research is one of the upcoming but great unknowns, often accompanied with a deep misunderstanding of how it really works, resulting sometimes in fears about “machines taking over our jobs”, but also in warranted concerns about how AI tools will impact education. The programme of the project’s Year 1 will be focused on “training” and familiarising the general public with the background of machine learning and AI – historical perspective, the science behind it, what it entails with special attention given to big data side of it in terms of training models, while the Year 2 will emphasise the emerging tools, applications and integration of AI in our every-day lives.

The Role of CPN:

Through the network of Science Clubs in Northern Serbia, the Center will work on the dissemination of various activities with long-term collaborators who are engaged in science, education, professional development and science promotion. For years, the Center has been recognised as an institution that implements various science communication formats such as school workshops, science shows, exhibitions, science cafes and many others, and in that capacity the CPN will work on the creation of modern and interactive programmes for the Researchers’ Nights in 2024 and 2025.
